Local expertise
Crypto in Washington
Washington's crypto market is shaped by its tech economy. The Seattle-Bellevue corridor is dense with software engineers and equity-compensated tech workers who adopted crypto early and hold meaningful amounts in self-custody - which is why lost-access cases (forgotten passwords, failed hardware wallets, seed phrases misplaced in a move) make up a large share of our Washington work.
The same population is also a target. We regularly see spear-phishing aimed at tech workers - fake job offers with poisoned "onboarding" packages, wallet-drainer links in developer forums, and convincing exchange-impersonation emails - alongside the romance and investment scams that affect every state. When funds move, we trace them across chains and exchanges and document the trail for law enforcement and counsel.
Washington was also one of the first states to bring crypto exchanges squarely under its money-transmitter licensing laws, which gives residents a clearer complaint path than in most states. We serve clients across Washington remotely - Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Bellevue and beyond - with in-person arrangements available in the Puget Sound area.
Crypto regulation and enforcement in Washington
Washington's Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) licenses virtual-currency exchangers as money transmitters under the state's Uniform Money Services Act - one of the earliest and clearest state frameworks in the country. Platforms serving Washington residents are expected to be licensed, and the DFI accepts complaints about those that aren't.
The DFI also publishes consumer alerts about fraudulent crypto platforms reported by Washington residents - a useful first check if an unfamiliar platform has approached you.
Crypto disputes involving Washington parties are heard in the state's superior courts and the state's federal districts; our forensic reporting and chain-of-custody practices are built for those standards.
